Heimat Rundhals Sweater Review

A Heavyweight 5-Gauge Merino Knit Made in Germany
I will admit it, I recently became a sucker for wool knitwears. The Heimat Rundhals sweater (Click on the link) is one of those that immediately stands out if you enjoy well-made knitwear. I came across Heimat while researching heritage knit brands, and I thought it was worth writing about on my blog.
Normally this blog focuses on boots and footwear, but clothing that pairs well with boots is just as interesting to me. The Heimat Rundhals fits perfectly into that space — it’s a heavyweight sweater built with traditional knitting techniques and made entirely in Germany.
Unlike most modern sweaters, the Rundhals uses 100% virgin Merino wool and a 5-gauge knit construction, giving it a dense structure and noticeable weight.
Where else can you buy this sweater?
In this Heimat Rundhals review, I want to cover:
- The history of Heimat Textil
- What makes the Heimat Rundhals sweater special
- Why 5-gauge wool knit matters
- Materials and construction
- Fit and everyday wear
- Pros and cons
- Whether the Heimat Rundhals is worth buying
The History Behind Heimat Textil
Before discussing the sweater itself, it helps to understand the brand.
Heimat Textil is a German knitwear brand founded by Christian Hofmann in 2016. Prior to starting Heimat, Hofmann spent many years working in the fashion industry, including time at Ralph Lauren. Through that experience he developed an appreciation for traditional garments and long-lasting materials.
The first product Heimat produced was actually a simple wool knit hat. Hofmann wanted a fisherman-style hat made with proper wool and traditional construction, but he struggled to find one on the market. That led him to create one himself.
From there the brand expanded into sweaters and knitwear.
The philosophy behind Heimat Textil is fairly straightforward:
- Produce garments in Germany
- Use traditional knitting techniques
- Focus on durability instead of trends
In many ways this approach mirrors the philosophy behind heritage footwear brands that I often review in this blog. The goal is not fast fashion, it’s something that lasts.
What Is the Heimat Rundhals Sweater?
“Rundhals” simply means crew neck in German.
The Heimat Rundhals sweater is essentially a classic crewneck knit, but its materials and construction place it in a very different category compared to most sweaters.
Key details include:
- 100% virgin Merino wool
- 5-gauge knit construction
- Made in Germany
- Ribbed collar, cuffs and hem
- Hand-linked seams
- Reinforced bartack stitching
Each Heimat Rundhals sweater uses around one kilogram of wool, which already tells you this is a substantial garment.
Compared to lightweight knitwear commonly sold today, the Rundhals feels much more solid and structured.
Virgin Merino Wool
The Heimat Rundhals uses virgin Merino wool, meaning the wool fibers have not been recycled or reused.
Merino wool is widely known for several natural properties:
- temperature regulation
- moisture management
- odor resistance
- breathability
- durability
This combination makes Merino wool suitable for both outdoor garments and everyday clothing.
The Heimat Rundhals sweater uses Merino wool that balances softness with durability. It’s comfortable enough to wear regularly but still structured enough to maintain the heavy knit construction.
5-Gauge Knit?
One of the defining characteristics of the Heimat Rundhals sweater is its 5-gauge knit.
Gauge refers to how many stitches are used per inch in the knit.
Generally speaking:
- High gauge (10-14) → thin, lightweight sweaters
- Low gauge (3-7) → thick, heavy sweaters
Heimat uses 5-gauge, therefore the Rundhals falls into the heavyweight knit category.
1. Better Structure
Because the yarn is thicker and the knit is denser, the sweater holds its shape extremely well.
I bet you have seen that some lightweight sweaters often lose their form over time, but a 5-gauge knit keeps a much more defined silhouette.
2. Increased Warmth
A thicker knit traps more air between the fibers, which improves insulation.
The Heimat Rundhals sweater works particularly well during:
- autumn
- winter
- cold spring days
In some cases it can even replace a light jacket.
3. Greater Durability
Heavier knit sweaters generally is more durable.
The thicker yarn reduces many problems:
- stretching
- fabric fatigue
- pilling
This is one of the reasons heritage knitwear brands prefer lower gauge constructions.
4. Distinct Texture
The 5-gauge knit creates a visible texture that gives the sweater character without adding unnecessary design details.
Construction Details
The Heimat Rundhals is built using several traditional knitwear techniques.
These include:
- Hand-linked seams
- Reinforced bartack stitching
- Ribbed cuffs and hem
- Structured collar
Hand linking connects knit panels stitch by stitch rather than using an overlock machine. This produces a cleaner interior seam and improves comfort.
The ribbing also helps the sweater maintain its shape after repeated wear.
Fit and Sizing
The Heimat Rundhals sweater has what I would describe as a modern classic fit. The sweater isn’t oversize, and not slim either, it’s somewhere in the between to be a classic fit. It’s very structured but also comfortable.
I usually wear 46 in Suits jackets and normally wear XL in many other brands. I would recommend you to take your regular size for a standard fit. If you want to layer up, let’s say you are often going to wear thicker flannel shirts or something underneath, I would size up, but I still think you don’t need to. For me, I wouldn’t size down at all for any reasons.
It’s a very dense structure, it’s gong to feel firm at first, but will relax with more wear.
Is the Heimat Rundhals Worth It?
After looking into the construction and materials, it’s clear that the Heimat Rundhals sweater is built differently from most knitwear on the market.
Rather than chasing trends, Heimat focuses on:
- traditional construction
- dense knit structures
- durable materials
The 5-gauge Merino wool knit gives the sweater real substance. Combined with German manufacturing and a clean design, the Rundhals becomes a piece that can stay in your wardrobe for years.
If you enjoy heritage clothing and appreciate garments that prioritize craftsmanship and durability, the Heimat Rundhals is definitely worth considering.
